It’s July! The Midway Point & Surrogacy

It’s July! Now we know that surrogacy journeys are rarely linear, they don’t follow a neat January-to-December timeline. But, the halfway point of the year offers a natural opportunity to assess where you stand. Consider what stage you’re in on your surrogacy journey and use this halfway point to make sure you’re set up for success in the months ahead:

1. Review Your Timeline

Work with your agency or coordinator to understand where you are against your projected timeline. Have there been delays? Are things moving faster than expected? Understanding your current position helps you plan practically and emotionally.

2. Check In With Your Surrogate

Your surrogate relationship is one of the most important connections in this journey. A mid-year check-in — whether it’s a phone call, a heartfelt card, or a thoughtful gift — goes a long way in nurturing that bond. Ask how she’s feeling. Be present. Express your gratitude.

3. Review Your Finances

Surrogacy is a significant financial investment, and costs can shift throughout the journey. Review your escrow account, confirm your payment schedules, and make sure you have a clear picture of any anticipated expenses in the second half of the year — including hospital costs, delivery fees, and post-birth legal work.

4. Confirm Your Legal Standing

Speak with your reproductive attorney to confirm that all legal documentation is current and that your pre-birth order (if applicable in your state or country) is on track. Legal timelines are often more rigid than other parts of the journey — don’t let them sneak up on you.

5. Prioritize Your Mental Health

The surrogacy journey is emotionally demanding for intended parents. If you haven’t already, consider connecting with a therapist who specializes in third-party reproduction. Many agencies offer mental health support as part of their services — use it.

6. Prepare Practically

If you’re expecting a birth in the second half of the year, now is the time to start preparing your home. Setting up the nursery, researching pediatricians, planning your parental leave, and understanding newborn care logistics all deserve attention before the whirlwind of birth day arrives.

7. Celebrate Your Progress

Seriously — celebrate it. However far you’ve come in the last six months, it matters. Light a candle, go out to dinner, write it in a journal. You are doing something remarkable.
